Character Information: Here

Personality: Akira is an interesting contrast of a person. His face to the wider world and his face to his allies are vastly different. And even further his face towards his enemies is perhaps even more honest than what he shows to his loved ones. None of these personas are false, just layers of defense and adaptation to a world that is far from kind to him.

Akira has a talent for being unnoticed when he wants to be. It’s unclear if this was the case all his life or a skill he learned after his arrest, but regardless it’s a skill he’s honed to rote habit. His false glasses hide his noted to be intense eyes and he slouches and tucks himself in close when around strangers, not showing much if any reactions or emotions. His stoic nature bleeds over into when he’s in danger as well- he rarely reacts with surprise or shock to anything at all. He’s naturally calm and steady, which makes him a strong leader for his mostly very reactive team. Though he is not infallible in this regard- enough happening in a short period can break his calm. When it does finally happen he shows himself to be just as ruled by his emotions as others. He’s just better at controlling it, usually. It was this breaking point that’s reached at the end of the infiltration of Maruki’s palace, and pushed him into making his disastrous choice. It’s thanks to his ability to react to sudden events with relative calmness that he’s able to take in information and details others would easily miss. He is observant to the point of being nearly superhuman, as shown by his Third Eye ability. Even outside of the Metaverse he can spot details quickly and with pinpoint accuracy, always quietly watching and waiting for his opportunities to find an advantage for himself. He uses this skill to notice people in need of his support and who might aid him in turn.

But what to do once he’s found someone that could help his cause? Well, once he decides to get invested in someone else his meek and placid mask drops and his natural charisma and compassion shines through. He attracts others like moths to flame, and his calm and reliable persona makes others come to trust him over time. He’s funny, relaxed and playful. Willing to embarrass himself or do any kind of flashy acts to charm those around him and for his own love of drama. Not just his teammates are won over, but people from various walks of life not only work with him but trust him with their deepest fears and doubts, which in turn he works to resolve using his Phantom Thief abilities and just generally being willing to listen to them when no one else will. In fact he can’t really stop himself from coming to the aid of the downtrodden and abused- it’s his deepest core, it’s his sense of righteousness that drives everything he does. It was what got him arrested in the first place, feeling compelled to get involved in a woman being assaulted in the street and in turn being arrested for ‘assaulting’ the attacker, Shido. And when he awakens his persona it’s by remembering that act and reassuring himself that not only was he in the right to do so, but was justified in doing ANYTHING to defend his sense of justice. There’s a reason his two personal personae, Arsene and Satanial, are styled after demons: not sin, no punishment are too dangerous to stop him from enforcing his view of right and wrong. To save others and punish those that control the systems of the world. It’s this willfulness that pushes him. A stubborn strength to face anything and anyone and never give up. Even facing gods and monsters and his own assured death will not make him back down if he decides his stance.

Excluding, of course, that One Time. But was it really him crumbling and discarding his beliefs? Or was it him finally seeing what HE wanted and going for it, even if every instinct told him it was wrong? Even someone known for such a strong sense of will and justice has something they can not sacrifice- for Akira it was the friends and happiness he had finally found in Tokyo. So in the end he once again forces his will on the world… this time for the worse. Because while he is a reliable and kind person he has one major defining flaw: his recklessness. He will risk himself, the world and everyone around him for a cause he’s decided on. While he is not suicidal and will do all he can to protect those fighting alongside him, he is perfectly willing to make choices off impulse and gut feeling. He throws himself into danger, trusting in his skill to save him rather than planning and care. The PT’s plan to trick Akechi and discover Shido’s identity was the prime example of this, as it all relied on him getting arrested, beaten and almost murdered just for a CHANCE to try and charm Sea to their side in only a few hours. And it’s this impulsiveness that dooms his reality, as Akechi presses him to choose the real world over the detective’s life Akira goes with his gut instead of his head and chooses the faustian deal Maruki offered, undoing all his efforts and ‘saving’ the perfect world he secretly always wanted.
